Biography

Bill Nagelkerke was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1958. He is a prolific children’s author and translator. He was formerly a children’s librarian.

He has written many short stories poems plays and articles published over four decades in the New Zealand School Journal and its Australian Equivalent the New South Wales School Magazine.

He has also appeared in over 30 anthologies and written more than two dozen books for both trade and educational publishers.

He was on the judging panel of the New Zealand Post Book Awards for children in 2009 and was a member of the international jury for the Hans Christian Anderson Awards in both 2006 and 2008.

His favourite food is squashed strawberry sandwiches although he says ‘banana sandwiches are very nice too and less messy’

His most loved books as a child were the Rupert Bear Annuals, although he had many favourite authors including David Almond, Melvin Burgess, Penelope Lively, Margaret Mahy and Geraldine McCaughrean.

His most recent publications have been contributing to the anthology Roar Squeak Purr: A New Zealand Anthology of Animal Poems and his most recent novel The Ghost House, as well as translating (from Dutch to English): Jeska Verstegen’s I’ll Keep you Close

Bill lives in Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
